How we spent our 1996 summer vacation...

on the Big Island of Hawaii

It's a two hour drive to Volcanos National Park. We drove from the dry Kohala Coast through the rainforests to an active volcano. The sulphuric gases were pretty high that day, so we decided just to drive and walk around caldera and observatory. This is a 360 degree view of the Kilauea Caldera from above the observatory.

On the way back, we stopped at Volcanos Winery, where Tom did a little tasting, and brought back a Honey wine, Passion Fruit wine (made from island passion fruit and California grape juice) and a Hawaiian wine, made from grapes grown at the vineyard on Hawaii.

We also took a detour to what is touted on the maps as the southern most point in the United States. It was pretty and windy, but otherwise unimpressive.
