The idea and inspiration for this quilt came from Tom's family and a book by Ami Simms, "Creating
Scrapbook Quilts." Though I printed the images using an Apple Color LaserWriter
printer, the paper used is actually made for use with color copiers. Ami describes
and sells her book and transfer paper at her site; both are also available at some
quilt shops.
I found source of another brand of transfer paper, which seemed to work as well (I
used both) at Dharma Trading Company.
The instructions don't reference laser printers, but the technology for most color
laser printers and color copiers is the same. And, most importantly, it did
work.
The piecing/sewing started in earnest the second week of March, after a visit to
Medford for Tom's birthday. Since this was my first quilt, it took quite a bit of
trial and error to get the piecing right to create the small blocks or sections that
put like-pictures together. Then larger blocks were created with similar sized/shaped
blocks, filling in with the signature squares and blank pieces of fabric that were
later painted or embroidered by machine and by hand.
Once four large blocks were put together, it finally started to look like something,
and I added the borders, batting and backing the weekend before the party. Fortunately,
quilting around the squares, and then the images didn't take nearly as long as the
previous steps.
We also found some beads and buttons that added to the quilt and the last stitch
was sewn, thread was snipped, and bead sewn on at 9pm on Thursday. We flew to Medford
on Friday, and presented the quilt on Saturday.
Some of the individual images will be posted to this site in the future. If you would
like to see more detailed sections of the quilt, send Patty an email.
If there's interest, I'll post those, too.
